How I became interested in the tech industry

Image
On the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA I was born in New York City back in 1983 and I grew up next door in NJ.  Eventually, somehow, I ended up in Seattle, WA working at Microsoft, which is about 3000 miles west of NJ.  If you asked me as a kid where I would someday end up living, never in my wildest imagination would I have thought it would be so far from home. Growing up I was a very curious boy growing up.  There were many different areas where I focused my time.  I really enjoyed playing sports, like basketball, soccer, and baseball.  I also liked hanging out with friends, watching movies, experimenting with photography, and listening to music.  Out of all these interests though, I really think I had some strong potential in basketball.  I was quite skilled.  Believe it or not, I was actually once able to slam dunk the ball.  I even beat a guy playing 1:1 who ended up playing professional basketball.  Looking back, I think if I devot...

Why Bundling Products Is Bad For Consumers

Image
Youve probably seen all sorts of businesses offering bundles, from the local cable company to the nearest fast food restaurant.  A bundle usually involves the business offering some sort of discount for bundling together multiple goods or services.  For example, by subscribing to TV, internet, and phone service through your local cable company, youll receive the benefit of a lower overall monthly bill. At first glance, bundles appear too good to be true.  You might think that the local cable company is cutting you a deal as a reward for being a loyal customer, but the business is actually just looking at improving the bottom line. Example Lets say that James and Michelle are both interested in buying a hamburger, soft drink, and French fries at the local fast food joint.  The table below shows what James and Michelle are willing to spend for each item on the menu individually: James Michelle Hamburger $2.00 $1.50 Soft Drink $0.30 $1.10 Fr...

Tips to writing an amazing resume

Image
When searching for a new job, your resume serves as your first impression to a potential employer.  Messing up your resume is not only embarrassing but means that you probably wont even get a chance to show off your charming smile or to explain in person why youre the right candidate for the job. Be Brief When it comes to reading a resume, keep it pithy.  Recruiters and hiring managers read hundreds of resumes and too much detail is taxing.  Think of your resume as a movie trailer; giving too much of the plot away just irks the audience.  The interview is like a movie and is your chance to expand on what's included in the resume.  The ideal length is one to three sentences per bullet. Worked at J Allen Meat Company in Tacoma, WA and managed the accounting division.  In this role, I supervised three junior accountants and led daily meetings with the company presidents with an emphasis on synergistically e-enabling progressive growth strategies.  This ...
