Redskins Name Kirk Cousins Starting Quarterback: Rumors Swirling ...
Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden has named Kirk Cousins the teams starting quarterback going forward, meaning that the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft will be riding the bench, if he indeed remains with the team.
The rumor is that several top members of the Washington Redskins front office and coaching staff want Robert Griffin III to be traded to another team before the start of the 2015 season, or want the team to release Griffin, but owner Daniel Snyder has shut them down so far and is insisting that the team keeps RGIII.
Griffin has been the face of the franchise, and he is the only player on the team with national endorsement deals, so its no surprise that Snyder wants him to remain with the team.
There have been rumors that teams such as the Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills or New York Jets could be interested in buying low on Robert Griffin III, but the Redskins (who traded five draft picks including four first round picks for the right to draft Griffin in 2012) would take a major loss by admitting that trading up to draft Robert Griffin III in 2012 was a mistake.
This should be a lesson to NFL teams, if you do not have a talented roster, do not trade all of your future assets to move up in the draft in order to select a quarterback, because you are setting that quarterback up for failure. Without first round picks in 2012-2014, the Washington Redskins were unable to draft highly talented offensive lineman to protect Robert Griffin III or high level playmakers to help him succeed, and you can make the argument that Griffin was repeatedly injured because of lack of protection on the offensive line (he also holds the ball too long, but no protection was a factor).
