Now that your eyes have become suitably largelet me add that Krav Maga, a new form of martial art, has virtually no rules and no limitations!! In fact the objective of Krav Maga is to take the enemy down as quickly as possible, which means that groin strikes, choking, and head butts are considered acceptable moves.

Yes, it turns out to be nothing short of brutal.

So what is Krav Maga exactly?

Its a relatively new form of martial art and is a self-defense system originally developed by the Israeli army. In Hebrew, it means contact combat. It was first used in the 1930s, by Israeli underground paramilitary organizations and since then, Krav Maga has spread, and its now practiced in over 30 countries as a regulated form of combat and not a sport.

The practitioners of Krav Maga are taught to use their bodies as well as the environment as a weapon. This means learning to use any object nearby, from bottles and sticks to bats or rods, as a lethal weapon.

A quick history lesson on Krav Maga

Krav Maga was founded by Imrich Lichtenfeld, a Hungarian Jew, born in 1910 whose father was a police chief inspector and a former circus acrobat. By the 1930s, Imrich who became a wrestler and boxer, realised his fighting skills were very different from those needed in a street fight. So he started to develop a technique using boxing, wrestling and his experiences of conflict.

In 1940, he fled to Palestine and trained in physical fitness for the Israel Defence Forces, where he developed the self-defence technique now known as Krav Maga. When he retired, he decided to open a school and teach a civilian form of the military form of Krav Maga but keeping most of the secrets of the system in the military.

Seventy years later it has resulted in a methodology thats simple, intuitive and highly effective.

But why learn such a violent form of combat if you dont intend to kill anyone?

It might sound aggressive but its not. Its all really about awareness, prevention and self-confidence. It teaches you to be able to spot danger, defend yourself and look out for places to run away.

The benefits perceived also are to avoid injury in real-life situations such as fights, street attacks, and violent encounters and advanced levels on defense from gun and knife attacks, multiple attacker scenarios, headlocks, and ground fighting.

Such a brutal technique is perhaps not something you would associate with women but Krav Maga Global says in the past 18 months its seen around a 50 per cent increase in women coming to train.

Males are becoming more predatory, especially in domestic, social and workplace situations, so women are gearing up to learn self-defense.

And why is Krav Maga becoming the trending martial arts with men and women alike?Krav maga

  • The trainers of Krav Magna insist that it has been designed for everyone. It is suitable for anyone with an interest in fitness or protecting themselves, just like you and me.
  • It is focused entirely on simplicity and realism. If its complicated to learn, it wont be taught and it wont work in the real world.
  • It emphasizes on simple, natural movements, with the belief that they are faster to learn and more effective under stress.
  • Its methods are intelligent, socially appropriate and do not encourage violence or aggression.
  • It is the most proven self-protection method anywhere every technique has been tried and tested in every situation and on the street. In every case, year after year, it has been proven to work.

So the next time you are cornered by an unwelcome stranger, just defend, punch, kick and run, and voila you are a kawabanga dude/dudette!!
