Louis van Gaal explains team selection for Man ... - The Sport Review

Louis van Gaal has explained his reasons for starting Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia in the full-back positions for Manchester United ahead of Wednesdays Champions League clash with Wolfsburg.

The Red Devils host the German side looking to notch up their first Champions League points of the group stage after their 2-1 defeat by PSV Eindhoven earlier this month.

Darmian is set to start at left-back, while Antonio Valencia has been chosen at right-back, with Daley Blind and Chris Smalling in central defence.

And Van Gaal explained the thinking behind his selection ahead of the game at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal said on BT Sport: Matteo Darmian is a defender. Also he has played in Italy as a left-sided defender. I think Valencia played very well last season at the right of defence so [that is why] Ive chosen this couple.

The midfield is key in every game. Not only Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin but also Rooney and the dropping in of Memphis and Mata is also very important.

United are the favourites to beat Wolfsburg at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, and Paddy Power are offering new customers enhanced odds of 6/1 on Van Gaals men to win. Click here for more information.
