Malawi :Sports
Sports from Malawi dates back from the colonial era and throughout the entire history of the nation. The periods have shaped sporting activities and as we saw the influences that rocked entertainment from the American, British and African styles it has been the same even in sports. Most popular sports in Malawi come from Britain although natural environment and terrain nature of Malawi has also led to the emergence of a number of sports in the country Malawi.
Football is the lead game and the most popular of all other sporting activities and been from long an important sport in Malawi. Netball takes the second rank football then followed by basketball, volleyball Athletics and cross-country running. These five games are really important in Malawi and are staged both locally and internationally. Apart from the five sports there are other sports activities that are found in Malawi such as tennis, cricket, rugby, squash, hiking, trekking, golf and a few water sports such as swimming, scuba diving, snorkel, water-skiing, sailing, kayak, and parasailing.
Nyasaland national football team currently known as The Flames is the national team of Malawi. The team is controlled by the Football Association of Malawi but despite the efforts they have put into sport they have never qualified for the World Cup finals. The Flames have however been lucky and managed to secure positions in the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations twice. Also they jubilated over the 1987 best performance which earned them a bronze medal in the All-Africa Games. Undeterred by past performance the team kept on the spirit never retreating and has frequently competed in matches in neighbouring countries. The Malawian government saw their intentions and allocated the Malawi Council of Sports a sizable grant to improve the countrys sporting infrastructure in 1999.
For quite some times men have dominated in the Malawians sports arena where the likes of Essau Boxer Kanyenda a Malawian international footballer has made headlines from his playing tactics and skills as a striker and also his experience while playing for South African side Polokwane City F.C. women too have not been left behind and this time we focus at one brave woman Oramah Massah a civil engineer who has an immeasurable passion for sports especially football. She is a renowned football player playing for women footballs national champions as well as a mentor and trainer of young women. She does this to help the young realize the potential in them especially in sports. Massah who works with the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure grew up in a strict family where one knowing his or her responsibility was the norm.
Massah is also good in table tennis, volleyball, hockey, drawing and designing buildings. She has great dreams and really encourages her team mates and those she trains to realize their purpose in life and to push hard to achieve their goals.
